Goldenseal Root (known to many as the cure all) – was first used by the Native Americans who named it “Yellow Root” due to its bright yellow colour.

For a diabetic this is an important herb because of its ability to lower blood sugar levels. It also has the effect of being a natural form of insulin; this supports the pancreas to decrease high levels of blood sugar. It is also an anti-inflammatory and can treat diabetic complications. Goldenseal also cleanses the urinary system. The Alkaloids in goldenseal are a natural anti biotic which helps fight infections. It also strengthens the heart. In addition it’s also antiseptic and stimulates the immune system. I have used Goldenseal for colds and the flu that was not responding to Echinacea alone. Goldenseal has natural compounds that activate certain white blood cells that destroy fungus, bacteria, and viruses. Goldenseal in liquid form can be used for ear infections, cold sores, and skin rashes, I’ve also used Goldenseal on skin blemished as a topical medication and it works amazing well.

Warning! If you use goldenseal long term it can have a negative effect on the intestinal flora. In women this can decrease the healthy bacteria found in the Vagina and can cause dryness, itching and or infection. I would therefore recommend adding friendly bacteria to your diet such as Lactobacillus Acidophilus.  This should be added when taking any Anti Biotic.

More information can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactobacillus_acidophilus

This can be added by taking supplements from a health store or by adding pro-biotic drinks to your diet. If you are Vegan a great source of pro-biotic is Coconut Yogurt, Tempeh, Miso, or Sauerkraut. The fermentation of the soya bean in Tempeh and Miso create the pro-biotic. You can also buy Vegan supplements.
