Lettuce Discuss… Health Benefits!
Organic Berry Powder Blend by Biovea: Improves Memory, Supports Healthy Vision, Anti-Ageing Protection, and Contains Beneficial Phytochemicals!
What does Organic Berry Powder Blend do?
Berries are astonishingly rich in beautiful red, blue and purple colours, provide some of the most powerful and significant health benefits for those fortunate enough to consume them every day. What is not so well known is that different berries provide different benefits to different parts of the body. Organic bilberry, for instance, supports healthy vision, while organic blueberry is known to protect the brain.
Berries are a rich source of many beneficial nutrients, and regular consumption has been shown to offer significant protection against chronic degenerative diseases, including heart disease, cataracts, diabetes and strokes. Research shows that the powerful health benefits of berries work synergistically and are far more effective when a full spectrum of fruits and berries is consumed rather than single berries or isolated compounds.
The brightly coloured freeze-dried berries in Organic Berry Powder Blend are the superfoods that research reveals can help protect against heart disease, memory and cognitive loss, certain infections, macular degeneration, inflammation and ageing. These berries contain natural phytochemicals, plant substances that can promote health and prevent chronic disease, including flavonoids, quercetin, anthocyanins, catechins, salicylic acid, phyto-estrogens, chlorogenic acid, ellagic acid and many others. In fact, organic black raspberries and organic black currants contain higher levels of disease fighting anthocyanins than any other common fruits.

Lettuce Discuss… What are Antioxidants?

IMG_4444

Antioxidants are phytochemicals. These are natural chemicals that are great for promoting health and well being in your body. They offer unique properties that help to maintain healthy cells.

Phytochemicals are non-nutritional chemicals found in plants. They have protective and disease preventing (not curing) properties.  Plants produce these chemicals to protect themselves, however these chemicals can also reduce the risk of diseases in humans. There are over a thousand known phytochemicals, the most common ones are found in Tomatoes (Lycopene), in fruits and berries (Flavanoids) and in soy (Isoflavinoids). These are all antioxidants. But before we get into antioxidants we need to understand what a “free Radical” is.

Free Radicals.

Simply free radicals are chemicals that are formed naturally in our body that have the potential to harm or damage our cells. In normal cellular functions they play an important role. However in large concentrations they can become hazardous to our bodies and cause damage to DNA, Cells, Proteins and Cell membranes. This can be caused by environmental toxins including and not limited too cigarette’s, metals, high oxygen atmospheres, and ionizing radiation (x-rays entering the atmosphere from space and exposure to radiation). These can increase the risk of cancer, heart disease and other diseases.

Antioxidants.

Antioxidants neutralize free radicals. The Antioxidants interact with the free radicals and prevent them causing any harm. The body does make its own antioxidants in small doses, these are called “endogenous”. Which simply means they are produced inside the cell or organism. However, the body really relies on the “exogenous” (externally produced), antioxidants to obtain what it needs. These are called dietary antioxidants and are found in higher concentrations in dietary supplements.

Summary:

Free Radicals in large concentrations can cause damage to cells, cell membranes and proteins within our body. Antioxidants interact with the free radicals and neutralize them rendering them harmless.

Lettuce Discuss … “That” Chocolate Spread!

Screen Shot 2015-05-04 at 1.22.23 PM

Before we became Vegan we both used to love this “Spread” Once we had a look inside the Ingredients…

We were amazed. Here is the break down and how they get the ingredient.

Sugar: NOT GOOD, Refined sugar is made from a processing and bleaching process, not bleach off the shelf but chemicals that react to make it white. Often Bone Char (taken from the bones of murdered cattle) is used in refining sugar. Unless you know where the sugar comes from it may not be Vegan. Know your food!

Unrefined beet sugar is perfect, no bone char is introduced anywhere near it as are turbinado sugar, organic evaporated cane juice, organic dehydrated cane juice, and organic cane sugar.

Palm Oil: NOT GOOD, Our old friend Palm Oil. Palm oil is worse in some instances than animal fats (not that I would ingest either) Palm Oil causes Hypertension, It is high in fat, it is a saturated fat, its high in cholesterol, it is also reported to block the receptors in the brain that shout out “I’m full, stop eating”. Palm Oil also causes inflammation that is linked to insulin resistance (type 2 diabetes)! It’s associated with obesity and other metabolic disorders. On a humanitarian level the planting of palms for palm oil is cutting back the natural environment for Orang Utans, if they could speak I would imagine they would hate palm oil too.

Hazelnuts: GOOD, some people are allergic to hazelnuts but they are generally good for you. They are rich in dietry fibre and folates, are a great source of energy, contain vitamin E, they are full of health promoting phyto chemicals. Pretty good and quite sweet too. We avoid them here because Hema is REALLY allergic so we have no cross contamination.

Cocoa: GOOD, Cocoa solids are one of the richest sources of flavanol antioxidants. Oh yeah, cocoa is great for migraines, menstrual pains, and just tastes really good. No complaints over cocoa.

Skim Milk: NOT GOOD, A study conducted by the University of Hawaii in 2007 suggested that drinking, using in cooking of low fat milk (skimmed) may increase the risk of low-grade prostate cancer tumors. Did you know that to get a cow to produce milk they first get it pregnant and then take the calf away so it keeps producing milk!

Whey (milk): NOT GOOD, derived from milk see above.

Lecithin (soy): NOT GOOD, see our blog on soy lecithin

Artificial Vanillin: NOT GOOD, artificial vanillin is made up from petroleum! Yep if you want some fuel (and I mean FOSSIL Fuels) eat nutella and other chemically derived spread! However, Organic Vanillin is good.

Next up: Our recipe for a Super Delicious Vegan Chocolate Spread!

Many Blessings!

Lettuce Discuss… Is Ethically and organically produced Honey Vegan?

Screen Shot 2014-09-05 at 11.58.42 AM

Is honey cruelty-free?

Today’s blog is not trying to get tied up in the ethics of insects; it is however giving our opinion on the subject of, Is Honey Vegan?

Firstly, Bees are a very important part of the ecology of our planet. If there were no bees the majority of pollination of plants would not be carried out and the planet as we know it would simply cease to maintain plant life. That’s just a fact. Bees are essential to every species on the planet because they pollinate the flowers of fruit trees.  Without pollinated flowers, there is no fruit on most fruit trees.  So, without bees, we have little or no fruit.

Knowingly or not we kill many insects as we walk through grass, or driving to the store to buy supplies we find insects on the windshield of our cars.

If we are to be staunchly vegan and being vegan states we cannot kill insects, this in turn means we cannot eat non-organic produce. This would be because of the pesticides used to keep insects from destroying the produce.

Another problem we face is how do we know that no insects are harmed in organic farms. Should each ear of corn be hand picked? Should each carrot be checked for insects first?

It is necessary to point this out so we have a balanced debate. Does every vegan know the true origin of his or her produce? Do we know that no Being, animal, or insect was harmed?

With this in mind the concern for the Bee is in consistent, as pointed out above other activities kill more insects than bee keeping.

Is honey a forbidden animal product? Bees make it. However, only happy bees make honey. If bees are stressed or threatened they stop making honey and protect the hive. The Bee is happy making the honey (and we are talking of ethically kept Bees). They produce more honey, beeswax and propolis (a resinous mixture bees use to fill gaps in the hive) than they need each year. An average apiary can produce 160 lbs of honey. Ethical beekeepers take between 10 and 50lbs leaving the bees 110lbs of honey, which is more than they would use over the winter.

According to food journalist Rowan Jacobson, bees are used in the production of about 100 foods, including almonds, avocados, broccoli, canola, cherries, cucumbers, lettuce, peaches, pears, plums, sunflowers, and tomatoes. Due to their pollination.

As with all our actions and decisions people will see grey areas. Not all honey is mass produced not all honey is ethically produced. The important thing is to research where your honey comes from. Is it ethically produced? Do the beekeepers care for the health of Bees and the environment that they live in?

If you want to support ethically produced honey and helping the bees survive, support your local organic apiary. Look for these icons

We consider ourselves to be vegan and believe we trust our own ethics we use and eat honey. It has so many benefits it is hard to ignore.

Manuka Honey benefits

Before we give the benefits there are things to look out for, each tub of Manuka honey bears its own Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) – this scale identifies the level of anti-bacterial potency. The UMF rating of 10+ is the minimum required to gain the UMF rating to be considered effective for purpose. Any Manuka Honey that meets or exceeds this requirement is commonly referred to as Active Manuka Honey. The Optimum levels of UMF are 10+ to 15+, so look out for this on your tub.

Manuka honey is anti bacterial and antimicrobial you can use it topically and by taking it internally. You can apply it directly to wounds and it will stop any bacteria from growing.

Digestive health, if you have bloating, stomach pain, indigestion, acid reflux, irritable bowl syndrome, and stomach ulcers. Stir a spoon of honey in some hot but not boiling water or tea and drink.

Immunity, help your immune system with honeys antibacterial properties stir a spoon of honey with some lemon to prevent a cold. The high antibacterial levels will treat ulcers, skin infections, cuts, cold sores, abrasions and more.

There are many more benefits and we have included a link below, we are in no way affiliated with Honey Mark Products it is useful information for your own research.
