Lettuce Discuss… Health Benefits!
“Just 1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder contains 3 to 9 percent of the recommended daily intake of iron, manganese, magnesium and zinc. In addition to carrying oxygen, iron helps make red blood cells and is essential for your immune system. Manganese is a component of enzymes that form cartilage and bones, metabolize nutrients and function as antioxidants inside every cell in your body. Magnesium helps produce energy and maintain a normal heart rhythm. Zinc is vital for the production and development of new cells, including immune system cells. Without enough zinc, the number of bacteria-fighting cells goes down and you become more susceptible to illness.
Flavonoids are the plant-based substances responsible for many of cocoa’s health benefits. There are many different types of flavonoids, but cocoa is a good source of two: epicatechin and catechin. Natural unsweetened cocoa powder has 196 milligrams of epicatechin in every 100 grams of powder, compared with unsweetened chocolate squares which have 142 milligrams and dark chocolate candy with 84 milligrams. The flavonoids in cocoa function as antioxidants that help prevent systemic inflammation. Epicatechin relaxes the muscles in blood vessels, which improves blood flow and helps lower blood pressure, according to research published in the March 2012 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.”

Organic Berry Powder Blend by Biovea: Improves Memory, Supports Healthy Vision, Anti-Ageing Protection, and Contains Beneficial Phytochemicals!
What does Organic Berry Powder Blend do?
Berries are astonishingly rich in beautiful red, blue and purple colours, provide some of the most powerful and significant health benefits for those fortunate enough to consume them every day. What is not so well known is that different berries provide different benefits to different parts of the body. Organic bilberry, for instance, supports healthy vision, while organic blueberry is known to protect the brain.
Berries are a rich source of many beneficial nutrients, and regular consumption has been shown to offer significant protection against chronic degenerative diseases, including heart disease, cataracts, diabetes and strokes. Research shows that the powerful health benefits of berries work synergistically and are far more effective when a full spectrum of fruits and berries is consumed rather than single berries or isolated compounds.
The brightly coloured freeze-dried berries in Organic Berry Powder Blend are the superfoods that research reveals can help protect against heart disease, memory and cognitive loss, certain infections, macular degeneration, inflammation and ageing. These berries contain natural phytochemicals, plant substances that can promote health and prevent chronic disease, including flavonoids, quercetin, anthocyanins, catechins, salicylic acid, phyto-estrogens, chlorogenic acid, ellagic acid and many others. In fact, organic black raspberries and organic black currants contain higher levels of disease fighting anthocyanins than any other common fruits.

Lettuce Discuss… What are Antioxidants?

IMG_4444

Antioxidants are phytochemicals. These are natural chemicals that are great for promoting health and well being in your body. They offer unique properties that help to maintain healthy cells.

Phytochemicals are non-nutritional chemicals found in plants. They have protective and disease preventing (not curing) properties.  Plants produce these chemicals to protect themselves, however these chemicals can also reduce the risk of diseases in humans. There are over a thousand known phytochemicals, the most common ones are found in Tomatoes (Lycopene), in fruits and berries (Flavanoids) and in soy (Isoflavinoids). These are all antioxidants. But before we get into antioxidants we need to understand what a “free Radical” is.

Free Radicals.

Simply free radicals are chemicals that are formed naturally in our body that have the potential to harm or damage our cells. In normal cellular functions they play an important role. However in large concentrations they can become hazardous to our bodies and cause damage to DNA, Cells, Proteins and Cell membranes. This can be caused by environmental toxins including and not limited too cigarette’s, metals, high oxygen atmospheres, and ionizing radiation (x-rays entering the atmosphere from space and exposure to radiation). These can increase the risk of cancer, heart disease and other diseases.

Antioxidants.

Antioxidants neutralize free radicals. The Antioxidants interact with the free radicals and prevent them causing any harm. The body does make its own antioxidants in small doses, these are called “endogenous”. Which simply means they are produced inside the cell or organism. However, the body really relies on the “exogenous” (externally produced), antioxidants to obtain what it needs. These are called dietary antioxidants and are found in higher concentrations in dietary supplements.

Summary:

Free Radicals in large concentrations can cause damage to cells, cell membranes and proteins within our body. Antioxidants interact with the free radicals and neutralize them rendering them harmless.
